Ben Haryo began Budo training: 1985, by learning many self-defense tricks from his grandfather, who served the Japanese Imperial Army during WWII as native volunteer militia. He also learn some self-defense tricks from a Japanese expatriate who lived in
Jakarta
in the late 1980s. Other martial arts experience he had includes the native Indonesian arts of Pencak Silat and Kuntao (from Pak Cacang and Mr. Khu Cen Yong), Russian Sambo (from Mr. Saleh Jusuf) as well as Korean Taekwondo and Hoshinshul (from Sabumnim Ahmad Setiadi).
In the 1990s Ben Haryo began studying Wado-ryu Karate and Jujutsu from C.A. Taman sensei, JKF-Wadokai Nanadan Renshi, who was a direct student of Wado-ryu founder Otsuka Hironori, and of Sasaki Takashi, Otsuka sensei's senior student in Hiroshima. Taman sensei also studied Judo at the Kodokan when he lived in
Japan
in the 60s, and he studied some combat Jujutsu (derived from the self-defense methods of Dutch and Japanese soldiers) when he was a young man. Mr. Taman later created a new Jujutsu self-defense syllabus as a separate system from the Karate syllabus, and call this new syllabus Goshinbudo Jujutsu.
In the late 1990s, Ben Haryo taught Karate and Jujutsu to the Yonryu Club in
Jakarta
. This Club were later disbanded and transformed into the current Goshinbudo Jujutsu Indonesia Club (GBI Club). From a humble beginnings with just one Dojo in a highschool, the Club now has spread in several provinces in Indonesia, thanks to the leadership of Denny Hardika (who was GBI Executive Officer in the early 2000s) and Trisno Kuswanto (GBI current Executive Officer).
In the 2000s Ben Haryo began studying many other Budo styles: Judo from Mr. Saleh Jusuf, Goju-ryu Karate from Firdaus S.A and Mr. Bryson Keenan, Genbukan Ninpo, KJJR Jujutsu and Kukishin weapons from Budi Martadi, traditional Dentokan (Hakko-ryu derived) Aiki Jujutsu from Mr. Roy Hobbs, Scientific Aikido from Prawira Wijaya (former Aikikai Area Representative for Indonesia) and American-style modern Jujutsu from Prof. George Kirby and Prof. Harold Brosious, both are high-ranking teachers under American Ju-Jitsu Association.
During the same time span, Ben Haryo forged a lasting friendships with Budo practitioners from all over the world. His Buyu (Budo Friends) includes Budokas from

In 2004 Ben Haryo were given authority by Mr. Taman to teach Jujutsu to all members of Wado-ryu in
Indonesia
. At about the same year, Ben Haryo, Budi Martadi and Mr. Raden Irawan H.W.B (from Jiujitsu Club
Indonesia
, a club affiliated with Australian Ju-Jitsu Association) founded Asosiasi Jujutsu Seluruh Indonesia (JUSINDO), the first Jujutsu organization in
Indonesia
which were founded for the purpose of furthering the advancement of all Jujutsu styles in
Indonesia
.
In 2006 Ben Haryo published a book about Judo and Jujutsu self-defense techniques, with blessings from KONI (Indonesian National Sports Committee). A year before, he published a philosophy book about Japanese martial arts. Currently, Ben Haryo is writing a book about the Jujutsu techniques in Wado-ryu.
In 2007 Ben Haryo and his student performed a demonstration at the presence of
Indonesia
's Minister of Sports, Mr. Adhyaksa Dault. This signifies an acceptance of JUSINDO by the Indonesian governments.
